PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Proposal - Project management

ABSTRACT

This study will examines and analyses the five key success factors usually considered in the implementation of TQM in Nigerian construction industries. Despite the use of the latest process improvement techniques and capable management, a firm s neglect of TQM to satisfy its customer s expectations portends declining capacity to face serious competition in the construction industries. A survey research will be adopted with judgmental sampling technique using a notable construction firm; Julius Berger Plc as a study background. The instrument of questionnaire modeled in Likert five point scales will be used to capture the data used for the study. The methods of multiple regression and correlation analyses will be used for the analyses of data and test of statistical hypotheses. The results of the analyses will indicate a relationship between the five key success factors of TQM being the independent variables and success index of TQM implementation as the dependent variable. The ranking of the independent variables in relation to TQM implementation are as follow; management commitment, training of employees, motivation of employees, customer s satisfaction survey and competitive benchmarking in which, only the first three factors are significant success factors in the TQM implementation. TQM philosophy should be recognized as a proactive operations strategy necessary for achieving competitive competence in construction industries.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Since after independence in 1960, Nigeria has been making concerted efforts toward sustainable and reliable infrastructure development through construction activities. Construction activities contribute to the economic development of any developing country. In the present day world, technical breakthroughs have revolutionized construction activities. Modern construction areas include high-rise buildings, dams and irrigation networks, energy conversion and industrial plants, environmental protection works, infrastructural facilities like roads, bridges, airports and seaports, satellite launching station, onshore and offshore oil terminals etc. Considering the even increasing competition in this sector, a construction organization may outperform the competition by being able to anticipate and respond quickly to customers demands with new ideas and technologies and to produce constructed facilities that satisfy or exceed customer s expectations. Construction firms need to embrace strategies based on quality and/or time in order to withstand the ever increasing competition in the industry.

Total Quality Management (TQM), could be described as a philosophy that involves everyone in an organization in a continual effort to improve quality and achieve customer s satisfaction. Despite the used of latest process improvement techniques and capable management, a firms neglect of its customers quality requirements may lead to disaster. Without customers focus, the TQM programme will lack the foundation on which to build further and the realization of project objectives will be elusive.

The institution of TQM in construction industries would provide the organization with the philosophy and spirit of

i) Never-ending push to improve; which could be referred to as continuous improved.

ii) Involvement of everyone in an organization

iii) A goal of customer s satisfaction, which means meeting or exceeding customer ...
