Regulations on Chinese Media

PART I: Regulations set political boundaries on Chinese media

The main purpose of this paper is to make an analysis on the regulations on Chinese media. The media in China has emerged, and it is growing every day. Before late 19th century, there was no modern journalism in China for the ruling government was too conservative to allow the press enough room for development (Hartford, 2000). In 1898, the Chinese press had a short period of prosperity in the Wu Xu Reform Movement that was soon oppressed by the Qing government to a state of silence. The Chinese press was not popular in the 19th century due to the emphasized political comments and weak news reports. However, just a few years later, after the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded China in 1900 and forced Qing Dynasty to sign the Xin Chou Treaty in 1901, the Qing government began to promote the New Deal in order to strengthen the country. From 1901 to 1911, the Qing government released laws allowing free development of the press as long as they did not oppose the Qing emperor. This was the high tide in the early modern news media, in China. The number of newspapers and magazines boomed with 105 newly-published items each year (Kalathil, 2003). It is necessary for any country that it should impose the necessary regulations on its media. The regulations on media are very necessary because it helps in restricting any unnecessary post, and any unethical behaviour. Just like the other countries, China has also imposed many regulations on its media.
