Response Paper on Gendering of Violence

The world has become a better place to reside and has created a more popular society. However, violence is an unavoidable issue and happens in almost every corner of the earth. Gender associated aggression and sexual misuse are the most demoralizing topic nowadays. Looking at the present matters, I acquiesce with the stimulus granted that is in spite of the important development of the last years in the direction of a more popular humanity, women today are revealed to a gender-related aggression and sexual misuse to a much higher degree than men. Gender violence does happen in both sexes but the cases on violence against women outnumbered male cases.  In a reconsider of studies of sexy misuse by Peters attests that the number of females related to sex being abused ranged from 6% to 62% but the number of males sexually being abused diverse from only 3% to 31% (Soroka & Bryjak, 1995, p.307). This manifestly shows that women are exposed to gender violence and sexual misuse two times higher than men. Why does sexual misuse and violence against women happen? Who is to be blamed? The significant cause why this happens is because of gender inequality which subsequently directs to discrimination in gender function, sexual harassment and household aggression engaging women.

Gender is the communal and personal traits associated with masculinity and femininity (Popenoe, 2000, p.296). Thus, gender role of both sexes depends on the customs the humanity is in and how they are conveyed up. To show, in India, in most family institution, male is the superior gender. Eventually, this creates a male dominated society and this favours man to take control of woman's life. A common case which supports this fact is where before a daughter is married the parents have to pay a sum of money, dowry (Indianchild, 2009, para.1), to the bridegroom. To put in other word, the female has a lower status and had to be 'sold' to get her married. The consequences of this action lead to further dire act which again causes the female to be the injured party, not the male. When the dowry allowance is not advised sufficient or is not forthcoming, the bride is often harassed, misused and made miserable. This abuse can escalate to the point where the husband or his family burn the bride, often by pouring kerosene on her and lighting it, usually with the intention of killing her. The number of dowry killings is increasing. In 1988, 2 209 women were killed in dowry related incidents and in 1990, 4 835 were killed (Indianchild, 2009, para.2). However, there are hardly any statistics that show male being violated caused by similar factor. In addition, advancement in technology brings desolation to the life of female babies. According to UNICEF, the problem of aborting female babies is getting worse as scientific methods of detecting the sex of a baby and of performing abortions ...
