Abstract

This Study tends to highlight the Multi -facets of Service Learning and would try to develop an understanding regarding the topic since it has been under discussion for quite some time now. This study also highlights the law which was a result of the Service Learning, besides it also describes the progression of bill into law.

Service Learning

Introduction

Service learning is a form of experiential education where the teaching transpires itself from conventional teaching methods to educating the students via applied services others around them. It is normally exercised in order to teach youth of how to behave in their surroundings. However, this form of learning tends to encourage students to become responsible citizens of the state and play their part in the progress of the nation as well as develop their own personality in such a way that it always remains a source of guidance for others. It is very effective form of teaching since it encourages participation in the student's part, as opposed to the conventional norms of learning and teaching (Timothy, 2010). 

Multi-Facets

Service Learning is multi-faceted and does not restrict itself to only one discipline, in fact the service learning is structured in a way that the student or the participant if fails to follow or go through any of the faces of service learning he/she might not meet the criteria. Faces of service learning are discussed as under

Indirect-Service

This level of the service learning tends to include the works which would serve the community as a whole which indirectly serves the individual living in a the society. This form intends to adapt the functions such as cleaning up the environment which enables the individual to take the whole society with him or enable him to take care of whole society rather than only him/her. This level further includes the roles such as serving food, building playgrounds, being indulged in a fund-raiser which obviously tends to promote a noble cause (Timothy, 2010).

Direct Service

This level of this face of Service Learning tends to promote direct interaction with the teachers or other people who are working as a teacher either formally or non-formally. This enables the students to identify the flaws in them so that they could not only correct them but it also prevents them from repeating it. Transferring his/her knowledge among the younger students, those students should be able to serve the community and the nation in better ways.

Advocacy

As the name suggests it tends to promote the change from the grass root level which means that the students or participants can work to tackle the issues right when it starts to affect the society. Since they are working on a grass root level they can also work towards influencing politicians in order to forms laws which intends to facilitate the general public.
