Smoking doubles the risk of developing kidney cancer and is the leading cause of cases of kidney cancer in men about 30% and approximately 25% in women.

Toxic substances in the tobacco increase the growth of abnormal cells (Benowitz, 958). Tobacco contains approximately 4000 different chemicals, including 60 cancer-causing substances (carcinogens) that are dangerous for health when chewed (Watkins, 19). In addition, several of these substances as carbon monoxide, tar, arsenic and lead, are toxic to the human body. Anything that irritates constantly inside the cheek, gums or tongue, such as dentures hurt, can cause a precancerous condition called leukoplakia. Excessive chewing of tobacco increases the risk of dental problems. Leukoplakia looks like a thick, whitish patch on the inside of the cheek, gums or tongue. It is associated with cigarette chewing tobacco, although other causes include badly fitting dentures, and chewing on one's cheek. An estimated 5% of cases of leukoplakia lead to cancer the dentist then perform a biopsy to facilitate it (Chollat, 24).
