a) Peter went to the cinema yesterday evening - Past simple

Reason: The verb 'went' tells that the sentence is in past simple tense. In this sentence, the subject has completed a job recently.

b) He had been living there for most of his life - Past perfect continuous

Reason: The verb 'has been living' implies that the sentence is in past perfect continuous tense. The sentence also shows that the work has already been done.

c) I was sleeping at 2.00AM - Past continuousReason: The verb 'was' implies that the sentence is in past simple sentence. The subject in the sentence was doing a job recently.

d) John and Mary hadn't been there before - Past perfect

Reason: The verb 'hadn't been' implies that the sentence is in past perfect tense. The two subjects in the sentence have completed a task.
