Fundamental Concepts of Construction Project Management

Abstract

In construction project management, there are several important fundamental concepts that the construction project managers should be aware of. These concepts include the concept of project scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communication, risk, and procurement. Every construction project manager is required to be well aware of these basic concepts. A quantitative research is carried out in this project to find out the important fundamental concepts of construction project management. Employees of a construction company are the participants of the study. The questionnaire is designed in a way to find out the level of important each employee gives to the different concepts of construction project management. Different SPSS tools are applied to find out the results. The results clearly indicate that people give equal amount of importance to all the basic concepts of construction project management. This is a good indication as it indicates that construction project managers try to understand each of these concept equally well as they give importance to all these aspects. This shows that majority of the managers are well aware of the basic concepts of the construction project management.

Introduction

Project management has been considered as an application of optimization theory and engineering science into projects. Project management is a complicated subject. It can be evaluated from different perspectives. In this paper, the fundamental concepts of project management in the field of construction are evaluated. This paper represents several questions that address the basic concepts of construction project management. The questions concern issues such as cost, quality, time, procurement, risk, communication , and scope (Nieto-Morote & Ruz-vila, 2011, p. 223). The principal argument is that focus is given on the advanced aspects of project management whereas the basic concepts are typically neglected. If the team members of the project do not get a thorough understanding of the fundamental concepts of project management, then they will not be able to understand the tasks that are assigned to them and their importance.

Background

The field of project management has developed and advanced at an extremely rapid pace in recent years. Project management is considered as a model or technique for controlling and planning complex undertakings of project. Project management is the process of the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements (Sears et.al, 2010, p. 67). Project management is an interrelated group of processes that enables the project team to achieve a successful project. However, the existing research on project management lacks the clarification of the fundamental concepts and ideas of project management. There are several basic concepts of project management. These include initiating the project, planning, controlling, monitoring, executing, representing, and so ...
