In U.K the term environmental law is generally associated with policies, measures and regulations derived to regarding water, land and air. The environmental regulatory bodies responsible for the protection and regulation of the environment principally includes: the Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland, the Environment Agency (that are covers Wales and England) Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and local legislative bodies.

History

U.K the very-first time systematic attempt on official level to control and regulate the effects of pollution resulting from industrial revolution was made through the introduction of Alkali Acts in nineteenth century. Afterwards several legislations to address water and land pollution were drafted. These laws, made to, control and manage one problem have now become part of complex laws that cover probably the majority of industrial activities regarding pollution. In parallel, controls were imposed on the use of land through the planning system.

Legislation

Marine and Costal Act was implemented in 2009 where as flood and water management strategies were derived by the end of 2010 in U.K. The marine and costal Act was regarding the protection of marine life from potential industrial waste and about ensuring the conservation of species. Furthermore the law required measures to be taken in order to ensure clean and healthy living environment for marine animals. The contaminated land act of 2006 was instituted in Wales.
