ABSTRACT

The main aim of this research was to critically appraise the literature regarding importance of nutrition for dementia patients. This study analyzes the role nutrition plays in the case of dementia patients. This study was undertaken to investigate reflection on nutrition and dementia patients. A Systematic review is chosen as the research method; this will not only help in summarising the evidence but will also give path for further practice among nurses. Dementia is a clinical syndrome characterized by deterioration in intellectual ability of sufficient severity to interfere with usual social or occupational functioning. According to the clinical criteria established in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the cognitive manifestations of dementia must include impairment in short-term and long-term memory in association with impairment in abstract thinking, impaired judgment, other disturbances of higher cortical function, or personality change. The diagnostic criteria for dementia also require that a specific organic factor be either demonstrated or presumed to be related etiologically to the cognitive and behavioral disturbance. Dementia is an inclusive term describing a group of brain disorders that cause memory loss and a decline in mental function. Researchers distinguish two types of dementia, reversible and irreversible dementia. Reversible dementia means the loss of memory can be cured partially or completely with treatment. Irreversible dementia is incurable; patients eventually become unable to take care of themselves and require 24-hour care. The researcher used 8 research based articles to get indepth knowledge about the research topic.
