Part 1: Introduction

In today's age of information, the use of information technology has become a vital ingredient for continuous success of any organization. Research shows that development of advanced information technology infrastructure and information systems remarkably helps the business in improving the performance and better management of the resources (Rainer R.K. & Turban E., 2008). Our consultancy firm provides consultation on analysis of information systems to the business and corporate users. Our services help the business owners to understand their information system requirements and also in the process of development and implementation of state-of-art information systems to achieve their business goals and competitive advantages.

This paper analyses the information systems needs of a corporate that provides telecommunication infrastructure to the corporate and home users. The company chosen for this assignment BT plc, a large UK based company, which provides telecommunication services on retail. In addition, the paper also includes spreadsheets to elaborate the use of various information systems, in a real organization.

About the Company

BT plc is headquartered in London. The company mainly focuses on providing telecommunication services to home based, corporate and government users. Currently, the company has about 18 million customers in UK; the main services company provides to the UK based customers include subscription television, telephony and broadband

Business Operations of BT plc: A Retail Telecommunication Infrastructure Provider

The business operations of a telecommunication service provider BT plc begin when a home or corporate based client places an order with the company, to get some telecommunication infrastructure or service. These orders are either placed through the company's website or 24 hours operated call centres. After the order is placed, the network or operations team visits the client's location if required. After the deal is finalized, the BTL plc employees check for the inventory; the finance department confirms the payment from the client. Once the order is completed, the client is informed. After setting an appointment with the client, the installation team of BTL plc visit the location again. The installation team installs the solution, tests it and trains the employees of client.

In addition to booking orders and providing installation services to the clients, the major operations of the company also include running a telephone exchange, local loop connections and trunk network for providing fixed line telephone services to the UK consumers. The company is responsible for managing nearly 28 million UK telephone lines. In addition, among the other most popular services of the company are broadband internet connection and bespoke solutions. Figure 1 shows how the company provides internet facilities (BT, 2012).
