Information Systems in Organizations

Answer ONE

The decision to implement SAP at Campbell Soup reflects the seriousness of organization towards the implementation of information management. Moving towards sophisticated information management systems remain a bold step for traditional organizations. Therefore, the decision of the organization to implement SAP depicts the fact that management intends to make the organization successful in any case.

Campbell Soup Company being in place since 1869 requires intense changes to particularly become successful. Having a strong reputation in the market; Campbell Soup had to make significant changes internally to ensure the future success of the business. Due to ever increasing spread of technology and innovation; Campbell Soup must make the decision to incorporate latest technology in the company. Implementing SAP debriefs the intentions of the organization to witness success in the long run.

Deciding to implement SAP clearly depicts the positive attitude of organization towards the information management systems. Being such an old company made it essential for Campbell Soup to rethink the information systems management. The most important changes relating to information systems were made by Doreen Wright; who was the company's first Chief Information Officer. Wright possessed the opportunity to directly report to the CEO of the organization; therefore; he was able to propose some significant changes in the company.

Doreen Wright came from an IT organization which was essentially decentralized long ago. He wanted to implement similar changes at Campbell Soup. The first and foremost observation of Doreen Wright was that the company lacked considering information technology as a global function. He further informed the CEO that almost every company has its unique information system made in accordance with the requirements of the business. However, Campbell Soup is using only a duplication of several information systems (Canary & McPhee, 2010).

This observation of Doreen Wright became the major basis of change in the viewpoint of Campbell Soup related to information systems or information technology. The decision regarding the implementation of SAP in the company was based around the creation of formal communication between the executives of information technology and the CIO. Doreen Wright became essentially successful in changing the organizational perspective on information management.

The most important critical factors relating to the Campbell Soup's deployment of SAP are the changes in the organization design, leadership and culture open to change. However, I found the role of leadership most critical in this regard. The role of Doreen Wright is immense in convincing the top management about the benefits of implementing a whole new information system in the company. Therefore, it can be clearly suggested that the most critical role in changing the information systems structure at Campbell Soups was played by Doreen Wright. Also; top management including CEO of the company played an important role as they permitted Doreen Wright to make significant changes in the organizational design and culture.
