Executive Summary

The purpose of this paper is to talk about the implementation of the knowledge management project. It is criticized that implementing a knowledge management project costs a lot and do not allow organization to reap advantages as much as it should and most of the projects of knowledge management gets failed. This paper undertakes discussion that revolves around this criticism. With this regard first of all a discussion is done about the reasons behind the success and failure of the knowledge management. This part is discussed with the help of examples of various organizations. After that an important discussion is done about the factors that play important role in designing a knowledge management project. Two types of factors are discussed including the factors related to management and factors related to technology. The last part discusses implementation of knowledge management project in an organization and undertakes discussion about its various facets. For this purpose the organization that is chosen is Xerox which is famous for implying knowledge management project successfully.

1.1 Introduction

Knowledge management has been referred to as an initial step that helps in distinguishing between raw information and knowledge. Almost every organization has access to raw information but there are only few selected organizations that have the ability and capacity to convert that information into useful and relevant knowledge and can use it for achievement of objectives.

In recent years, a number of researches have been conducted and empirically investigated about the benefits of knowledge management in relation to the performance of the organization (Becerra-Fernadez & Sabherwal, 2010, 27; Jayachandran, Sharma, Kaufman, & Raman, 2009, 178). Scores of researchers such as Gold, Malhotra and Segars (2010); Lee, Chae and Suh (2013) and Mutiran and Mohamed (2013) have put forwarded the notion that the performance of the business can be improved if there is effective usage of creation, storage, learning, dissemination and sharing of knowledge (Gold, Malhotra, & Segars, 2010, 192; Lee, Chae & Suh, 2013, 284; Mutiran & Mohamed, 2013, 201).
