Introduction

The modern terrorism has affected the significance of the influence of the politics, both domestically as well as internationally. The liberal democracies of the word have had a lot of time to learn about the strategies, motivations, goals and tactics of the diverse range of terrorist organizations. Various strategies and approaches have been developed to respond to these attacks as well. Terrorism was taken to be a second order security concern until the 1990s. it was mostly ignored in the standard books on international politics (Ross, 2006, p.2).

However, the September 11 events of 2001 have substantially changed image and approach of the modern terrorism. The global impact of modern terrorism has been such that today, every country in the world primarily targets terrorism as their priority concern. Most of the focus of today's economies is directed towards the countering the threat of terrorism. This has highlighted that the non-state actors has gained more importance and influence over the states. These non-state actors are considered to be the terrorist organizations. The reach of terrorist organizations has become global. They target and threaten any country they wish.

Terrorism in modern era

The War on Terror initiated by the United States highlighted the growing of terrorism and that it had opened up new lines that would help determine the global politics for the future which was evidently foreseeable. Terrorism is not just a highly contested phenomenon but is considered to be a concept that is deeply controversial. It has been argued by various critical theorists that the approach on terrorism amounts to misconceptions as well as stereotypes. The significance of terrorism has been overstated grossly, which is mainly due to the ideological reasons (Hannity, 2004).

There have been numerous debates regarding the significance of terrorism and the approach to encounter them. There are various differences noted in the approach and strategies to counter the acts of terrorism. However, it is important to note that that the price which is paid for the protection of the rights of the people of the society is considered to be too high. This price includes the erosion of the basic and necessary rights and freedom of the individuals of the society. The United States have taken the approach of using their military and armed forces to counter this threat even within their own premises (Ross, 2006, p.2). However, there are various implications associated with this strategy. These would include the broad reference of the terrorism in association with the attempt to enhance the political ends with the use of violence in the creation of the climate of fear, uncertainty and apprehension (Milavic, 2005).

However, the terrorism is considered to be a term that is deeply controversial and is highly disapproving. It is mostly used as a political tool. Critical perspectives, radical perspectives as well as mainstreaming have offered various different views on the nature of terrorism along with the value of the concept.
