Abstract

The pain is the most common experience a patient suffers. The pain management is an essential factor for the care of patients. This paper aims to review a majority of the evidences regarding to the assessment of pain tools for the patients and to establish if the use of a tool can be recommended into nursing practice. The suitable pain management has long been a problematic area of the nursing practice and research. Therefore, this study will take the systematic approach in which there will be a wide range of relevant literature which relates to the matter of subjects such as Google scholar, journals, books, Science direct, ProQuest, CINAHL, PubMed, and Embase. The collected data will be analysed and compared. The assessment aims to assist the cause of pain, impact of the life quality, the effectiveness, and treatment. The pain sensation is extremely difficult to define. The most common definition describes the pain to be an unpleasant emotional and sensory experience linked with the potential and actual damage of the tissue and describing it in terms of the damage. It is essential that the pain needs to be managed. For humanitarian reasons the pain has to be managed so as to prevent the complications and improve the recovery. The appetite, mobility, sleep, mood of the patients shall be affected by pain. It can therefore, have devastating effects i.e. the patients are not able to mobilize due to pain, they are not able to eat a nutritious diet, they are at a risk of pressure ulcers, and it can therefore affect wound healing. The implementation of VAS along with NRS shall be recommended in the hospitals and they might improve the pain management among the patients of all age groups by offering consistent and systemic approach for the assessment of pain for guiding interventions. In assessing the pain the VRS may also prove to be beneficial for assessing pain but initially the validation are needed. Additional studies are needed into the pain assessment effects for the pain assessment tools on the patient outcomes and pain management practices.
