1.Introduction

1.1Background

The word “terrorism” strikes fear in the mind of many people. Terrorism is now a new phenomenon, but after 9/11 the term is being frequently used. However, it exists since the beginning of time, and has been the cause of fall and rise of empires to gain power. The main problem of the modern world is terrorism which brings instability in the modern world. Nonetheless, terrorism not only unstable the world, but also diminishes the fundamental human rights of liberty and equality.

1.2Problem Statement

This paper explores the notion of terrorism and discusses how it weakened the basic human rights, liberty and equality, particularly in United Kingdom. To do the paper summarized four significant articles that provide a Review of Counter Terrorism and Security Powers.

2.1United Kingdom: Submission for the Review of Counterterrorism and Security Powers

In the year 2010, a rapid review was announced by the Home Secretary by the Home Office of major powers of counter-terrorism, to be carried out by the Office of Security and Counter Terrorism and supervised by Lord Macdonald of River Glaven QC. The declared purpose of the review is to make sure that the measures and powers enclosed by the review are essential, proportionate and effective and meet the obligations of domestic and international human rights in UK (Amnesty International, 2010, pp.4-13).

In this article, Amnesty international condemned the efforts of UK government made to lessen terrorism is actually harming human rights standards and laws. Amnesty international highlighted key apprehensions linked to the four powers. Prevention of Terrorism Act 2005, allowed the detention of foreign national for indefinite period, as well as without any trail or charge. Amnesty international argued that this Act violate the basic human rights of free trail. Similarly, the privacy and the rights of freedom of association and expression are breached.

In the name of terrorism prevention, UK government eradicates the protection from citizens against ill-treatment and torture. Amnesty International opposed the scheme that unenforceable and untrustworthy humane treatment promises, provided by UK government that torture, can sufficiently, effectively and reliably alleviate the torture risk of the person upon come back.
