The state of Alabama closely resembles the general U.S. population in some statistical indices of motherhood, but varies widely in others. For example, 49.7 percent of all Alabama households were married-couple families, and 39.6 percent of those families had children of their own under 18 years; the comparable figures for all households in the United States were 49.8 percent and 43.5 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) for 2005 through 2007. In Alabama, 14.5 percent of all households were headed by women with no husband present, and 57.8 percent of those households had children under 18. In the United States, those figures were 12.5 and 59.6 percent, respectively. The average family size in Alabama was 3.04 persons, just slightly lower than the national average of 3.19.

Purpose of the Genogram

A Genogram is a format for drawing a family tree that records information about family members and their relationships on at least three generations. Genogram show the family information in a way that provides a quick overview of complex family patterns and a rich source of hypotheses about how a clinical problem may be connected to the family context and the evolution of the problem and context over time.

Be prepared for lots of information: My grandmother is able to recite families of 7 or more people, with children in order and biographical data.

The main point of a Genogram is a graphic description of how the different members of the family are biologically and legally related to each other from one generation to the nex

Family Relations

Clearly, a relative chronology may vary in detail depending on the scope and depth of information available. The level of family relationships is the most inferential a Genogram: this involves delineating the relationships between family members. Such characterizations are based on reports from family members and direct observation.

Relations between two members

The usual practice is to include some of these around the subject of the study.

Genogram information can be obtained by interviewing one or more family members. Clearly, the information of several family members provides an opportunity to compare perspectives and directly observe the interactions. Often, when interviewing several members of the family gets the Rashomon effect, named after a famous Japanese film in which an event is shown from the perspective of several different characters.
