Abstract

This case study is about the Midstate University Business Placement Office (B): Development of the System. As it was seen that in 1970's there was a huge increase in the graph of graduating students in business majors and a huge chunk was graduating from Midstate university too. The numbers were twofold in a short span of time. However, the problems also increased two fold for the Business placement Office. It was getting impossible for them to schedule 2000 students for the interview in 500 companies, which makes 20,000 interviews. Being a consultant I can claim that there are numerous universities who were suffering with the same problem, and sooner or later they did realize that the only solution to this is employing latest technology and information system. Further, the paper discusses the problems faced by Business Placement Office and then possible solutions are proposed.

Introduction

This case study revolves around the Business Placement Office in Midstate University. In spite of providing excellent education to the students many universities lacked the modern use of information system in each of their departments. Similar is the case with Midstate University. As it was seen that in 1970's there was a huge increase in the graph of graduating students in business majors and a huge chunk was graduating from Midstate university too. The numbers were twofold in a short span of time. However, the problems also increased two fold for the Business placement Office. It was getting impossible for them to schedule 2000 students for the interview in 500 companies, which makes 20,000 interviews. Discussion

Business Placement Office faced a huge setback, when the graduates started complaining that how they wasting their senior year in stand up in the line for signing for the interview. In 1280 lottery system was introduced, which had many problems. Then the head of Business Placement Office decided to buy the first Apple system in 1981.

Problems with the programmed system in BASIC for the APPLE 1981-1982

One of the foremost problems was that the program could not check if the students were qualified to be on that interview schedule. They were just told that it is being checked, which was not true. Secondly, Bids did not contain the student's time availability. Due to this reason most of the times the selected students could not be scheduled because of time conflicts.

However, it was a big failure. The system could not manage the huge volume and thus it could never get the results on time. Consequently, the BPO staff had to work manually to get the scheduling work done ...
