The Effects of Music on a Person's Interpersonal Communication

Chapter - I

Introduction

Music is a large part of not only American culture, but all cultures. It is so pervasive, in fact, that they are often not consciously aware of just how fully music permeates our lives. Let us consider the US culture in particular. Many of people get up to the sound of music. They hear music "accidentally" all day long-from the sounds the computers make when they put them on, to the music played when they are set "on hold," to the background music that is almost everywhere in stores, elevators, restaurants, and offices. Owing to technology, they can listen to music anyplace they choose; at their desks, in their cars, in their homes, through their computers, and even while they exercise or walk. Personal stereos, television, and radio, give people first-time contact to music all over the night and day and thus they affect the people in many ways for examplel a person who listens to rap music's communication with others differs from others who do not.

Most of Americans have some access to live music anyhow. They can listen to live music via worship services, concerts, parties, holiday celebrations and festivals. Music is an significant part of parades, circuses, and sporting & social events. These common opportunities to face music are frequently lost to people with communication problems. These people hear music at irregular intervals if at all, and then only through the intervention of other people. This is mainly true for people who live in residential facilities. The opportunity to encounter spontaneous musical events may be very limited, and the music that is offered can not meet their needs, reflect their interests, or accommodate their personal preferences but when they find the music they like or prefer, they try to talk about it. This talking help them break the ice on their interpersonal communication skills.

The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of music on a person's interpersonal communication. As a previous intensive study of high school teenagers finds that music serves as a powerful communication medium, speaking directly to emotions. Here, both women and men most often connected these feelings with music: love, excitement and happiness, Women were somewhat more likely to associate emotions with music and to use music for "mood management." Social class, race and ethnicity generally did not discriminate among emotions felt by men and women. Cluster analysis allowed these youths to be sorted into different types of listeners: "mainstreamers" "heavy rockers," "indifferent" and "music lovers."

Popular music holds a vital position in modern mass media. It is the main content of radio, and music videos have made it a growing component of television viewing. Music also appears to be an increasingly important part of feature film production. With records, tapes and compact discs, along with live concerts and performances, popular music is a ubiquitous medium in its own ...
